Is my website ‘Responsive’?
What is a Responsive website?
Responsive website design has been around for some time now, however some are still un-familiar with the term. So what exactly does ‘Responsive’ mean?
“Responsive is an approach to web design aimed at allowing desktop webpages to be viewed in response to the size of the device one is viewing them on.”
In layman’s terms, it means the website will respond & adapt to whatever device its being viewed on, to allow for a much better user experience.
With responsive websites, you will notice that the layout that you see on a desktop or laptop will be completely different from the one you see on perhaps a tablet or mobile device.
Im sure you have previously visited websites where you have constantly had to zoom and ‘pinch’ your fingers in order to read that tiny copy? Well responsive websites eliminate that issue with text and images displayed larger for those smaller devices, meaning there’s no need to zoom and scroll in all directions to navigate around the website.
Responsive websites are effectively the successors to ‘mobile websites’ where a completely separate website would be created purely for mobile users, and these visitors would be redirect to the alternative website.
As you can imagine, this wasn’t the most cost-effective option and meant you would have to then manage two websites rather than one.
The difference with responsive websites, is it is just one website that automatically adapts to the size of the device being used.
Reasons why my website should be ‘Responsive’?
- Over 55% of all website traffic if now from a mobile device
Can you afford for your customers to be suffering from poor user experience when browsing on their mobile.
- Google now rewards ‘mobile-friendly’ websites
Google has recently revealed that they now favour mobile-optimised websites, over those that aren’t.
- Better user experience
No ‘pinching’ and ‘zooming’ when on smaller devices. Everything looks great!
